MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) - A woman has been charged with identity theft after she allegedly posted a man’s arrest warrant containing personal information on social media.
Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones said Emilee Berger, 48, posted a copy of the man’s arrest warrant to a Facebook group. The warrant included sensitive personal details such as his Social Security number, date of birth, driver’s license number, and full name.
Detectives interviewed the man, who confirmed he did not give permission for his personal information to be shared publicly.
Berger told detectives that after being notified by another person, she redacted the sensitive information and reposted the warrant on social media, Sheriff Jones said.
The following day, Berger created another post in the group acknowledging that the original warrant had been posted without redacting the personal information, Jones added.
"The copy of the warrant that appeared on Facebook contained a visible line through the document. Detectives determined this line is automatically applied when documents are scanned into the Monroe County court system," Jones explained. "The original warrant does not contain this line, indicating the copy posted on social media came from the Monroe County Clerk of Court’s electronic system and was transferred to Ms. Berger by someone with authorized access to that system."
Detectives also spoke with the Monroe County court clerk, who requested an audit of the court system.
The audit revealed that two individuals accessed the system between the time the warrant was entered and when it appeared on social media. Sheriff Jones noted that no employees from the sheriff’s office or the clerk’s office accessed the case during that period.
"Because the warrant posted on social media contained unredacted personal identifying information, detectives determined a criminal offense had occurred," Jones said.
Berger was arrested and charged with identity theft on Friday. She has since been released after posting a $3,000 bond.
Sheriff Jones stated that the investigation into how the document was accessed and distributed is ongoing.
