Building Financial Resilience in Central Oregon's Seasonal Economy

Published 7:30 am Sunday, March 15, 2026

Living in Central Oregon offers many rewards. From powder days on Mt. Bachelor to summer weekends on the Deschutes, we are fortunate to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle that attracts visitors from across the country.

However, the region’s popularity as a destination means many jobs depend on tourism, construction cycles, and other industries that fluctuate with the seasons. For many Central Oregonians, income in July can be very different from income in January.

This seasonality can make managing personal finances more complex than simply following a conventional monthly budget.

Whether you work as a landscaper, server, construction worker, or in another seasonal industry, financial stability throughout the year depends not only on maximizing earnings during busy periods but also on managing the quieter months effectively.

Here are some strategies to help if your income varies with Central Oregon’s seasons:

Structure your budget around your slowest month

When work is steady and income is flowing, it’s easy to increase spending. By building your budget based on your slowest month, you create financial breathing room when work slows down.

Embrace “peak season” savings

During busy times, consider automatically setting aside a portion of each paycheck into savings. Even small, consistent amounts saved during high-income months can make a significant difference during leaner periods.

Build an emergency fund

This advice applies to everyone but is especially important for those in seasonal industries. Unexpected expenses like car repairs, medical bills, or home maintenance can arise during slower months when income is limited. Aim to set aside three to six months of basic expenses gradually to provide peace of mind.

Plan for predictable expenses

Whether it’s holiday spending, annual or semi-annual insurance renewals, property taxes, or back-to-school costs, anticipating these expenses can reduce stress caused by seasonal income shifts.

Central Oregon’s seasonal rhythms contribute to the region’s unique energy, opportunities, and beauty that attract people from far and wide. With thoughtful planning during busy months and careful budgeting for slower ones, you can build a financial foundation strong enough to endure even a Central Oregon winter.
